Sussex SpanielKennel Gazette featured pedigree breed for November

The Sussex Spaniel

A heavily built dog with a rich golden-liver coat which is abundant and flat, the Sussex Spaniel is an old breed of great substance. He is somewhat unusual among gundogs in that he tends to give tongue when working.
He has a wider head than many Spaniels, and his rather wrinkled brows give him a frowning look; but that is as far as the frown goes because he is a kindly dog as capable of being a family dog in a country household as he is of crashing his way through thick cover.
His mode of progression is characterised by a distinct roll, and, in fact, he does give the impression of being a loose-framed dog, but with massively boned limbs and powerful muscles.
This is another breed which deserves more general acclaim than has been his lot of recent years.

What is the Fit For Function: Fit For Life campaign?

The Kennel Club believes that every dog should be bred to be fit enough to enjoy its life to the full. At the heart of this campaign is the belief that every dog, even if its function is solely to be a pet, should be able to see, breathe and walk freely. The Kennel Club has been working over the past twenty years to improve breed health and welfare and the Fit For Function: Fit For Life campaign keeps this at the top of our agenda.
The Fit For Function: Fit For Life campaign aims to make breeders, judges and puppy buyers aware of the opportunities that there are to work with the Kennel Club on health related issues and reminds them that a dog’s health should be the most important consideration in any decisions they make.

Caroline Kisko with BaileyWe Love Our Dogs

The recent media and public criticism of the dog showing community and of the Kennel Club, has had an enormous impact on the dog world. This has highlighted negative criticisms, and, while much is being done to improve the health of all our dogs , it was a stark reminder of just how much more there is still to do, and how important it is to get across all the effort being made by so many groups and individuals.

However, more than that the programme highlighted how many of those outside the dog world see us – and just how far their vision is from the reality that we all know and live.

We Love Our Dogs is a direct and simple response to one of the biggest criticisms – that exhibitors and breeders are not dog lovers too. It misses the point that our ‘champions’ are not just champions – but also the fun-loving, much loved pets that we know them to be. The general public sees our dogs in the show ring ‘at work’, beautifully presented, and on their best behaviour. What they don’t see is those same show dogs before the bath, digging holes in the garden or emerging green with slime from that pond. In short, they don’t see our dogs having fun with us.
